Abraham Lincoln saved our country from dividing into 2 separate unions and basically saved our country. He kept our country together when we were about to split due to the civil war and slavery. The South wanted to split from the North and become their own country. They wanted to keep slavery while the North and Lincoln were against it. Lincoln helped unite the country during its biggest internal conflict in its history.
Abraham Lincoln Came into presidency with a lot on his plate, he wanted to reunite the north and the south and to put in place the emancipation proclamation. He knew what was good for the union and had his own opinion on slavery which was against it. Lincoln was fighting for a new birth of freedom not just reuniting the union. The south depended on slaves on the plantation, that’s how they were maintaining since they did not have to pay the slaves. The North with all the industrial business had a total different way of life and can see how they totally disagreed with the way slaves were being used and treated.
In the south the Union wanted slavery and in the North they were against slavery. Before the Civil War the United States had many acts to protect slavery. They stopped the slave trade and importation of slaves under military order. Right after the civil war the 13th amendment was passed, many changes were made. The amendment gave African Americans more rights, even though it gave them more rights they had a lot of other issues.
One factor why historians believe slavery was abolished was because of the actions of white, middle-class campaigners such as Granville Sharp and William Wilberforce. Granville Sharp was involved in many court cases, helping black people from being treated badly by their owners and he stopped them being made to go back to their home land in the West Indies. Sharp managed to get judges to agree that masters of slaves could not force a slave to go out of Britain. Sharp did not manage to get slavery or the slave trade abolished, but he had started the campaign against slavery. A black youth who was queuing for free medical help, with a badly swollen head,
These tactics left the United States not only covered with blood, but scarred with imaginary lines. Abolitionism transformed this country and changed life for many of the day. Abolitionists used legislation to their advantage. This is evident from the early beginnings of this nation. From the Declaration of Independence, to the Missouri Compromise, to the Compromise of 1850, those dedicated to ending slavery tried their best to make sure that slavery did not spread any farther than it already had.
However, even after its abolishment, blacks were still kept in slavery and were treated poorly and unequal to other, white Americans. This abuse was much more common in the Southern states due to the more racist nature of the white people who lived there and the fact that the Southern states had originally fought to keep Black Slavery legal. Soon after the Civil War was won by the Northern States, the 13th, 14th and 15th amendment were brought into congress. The thirteenth amendment stated that all Slavery must end in America; the fourteenth amendment stated that everyone living on American soil should gain citizenship and the fifteenth amendment stated that all citizens should gain the right to vote. These amendments could be considered as vital moves towards black equalities, if they had worked.
Violence played a huge role in the outcome of the Civil War. If abolitionists continued using moral-suasion to fight slavery, the outcome of the war would have been very different. “More than half a century after the violent end of slavery of Haiti they remained committed to the conservative tactic of moral suasion” (36). Eventually “American abolitionists had run out of patience” and realized that moral suasion was delaying abolishment, and other tactics were needed if they wanted to win the war against slavery (39). Instead of focusing on the obvious unconstitutional and emotional treachery of slavery which is very much overdone, the economic event was very much overlooked. Though its strong economic gain for the entire nation forever impacted our dominance, the negative effects will always pour through. It was the existence of slavery, with its negative impact on politics, economics, and social relations that fatally crippled the South in its bid for independence. The slave trade eventually played a central role in determining the fate of the South, as a business that created a unified South under proslavery ideology and encouraged western migration to preserve the institution of slavery. As mentioned by William Harper, “The cultivation of the great staple crop cannot be carried on without slaves.” (Harper, Memoir in Slavery, 1837) In a time of western expansion and the cotton boom, some slave traders were able to accumulate great wealth from the slave-trading business and sought opportunities to acquire higher social status and financial stability.
These things can alter the history of America if Blacks didn’t exist. Similar to the history of America, the politics of America would not stay the same without the existence of Blacks. Many policies in existence today would not be present. Ellison states, The nation could not survive being deprived of their presence because, by the irony implicit in the dynamics of American democracy, they symbolize both its most stringent testing and the possibility of its greatest human freedom(83). Although each of them had their own perspectives, their main objective was the same. Reparations in this society can be defined by stating that the U.S. government needs to make a formal apology to blacks for the damage caused by the transatlantic slave trade due to social and economic consequences in the United States. Advocates also feel the U.S. government owes the black people. Blacks remain behind due to many things, the most important being slavery. The Constitution, until recently, did not apply to blacks; blacks feel they deserve payments from 310 years of slavery, destruction to their minds and culture.
