Abigail Williams vs. Elizabeth Proctor

Abigail Williams and Elizabeth Proctor are two main characters in the play The Crucible, although they perceive different roles in the play, they also have similarities and differences.
Abigail Williams in the play is viewed as beautiful, young and evil. In the beginning of the play people see her as a liar. No one likes her because she is not one of the most trustworthy people. She was dismissed from her job as a servant because she had slept with the man she was working for, whom was married. Her name was blushed throughout the town because of her actions involving John Proctor. In the middle of the play Abigail Williams’ secret was revealed when people found out about the witchcraft she took place in in the beginning of the play in the forest. Knowing Abigail’s reputation as a liar she knew she could get away with it again. She had people fooled to believe that she had god in her and she could see the evil in people and could tell if they were in witchcraft. One person after another she had them hung. People so clueless of her intentions saw her as a saint for getting rid of the “evil” in the town. In the end of the play Abigail’s reputation was soon found out about, she knew people would come back and accuse her of murder so she ran away with her uncle’s money and Mercy Lewis.
In contrast with Abigail Williams Elizabeth Proctor was not your ideal woman. She was not very young, and not as beautiful. People saw her as a very holy woman, going to church every day, never committing a sin. She had never told a lie before; she did not believe it was a Christian thing to do. She dreaded knowing that her husband had committed a sin, adultery, but still stood by his side, even though it hurt deeply.
