Bringing together education and healing was a life-changing experience that made me realize that nursing is my true calling. Traditionally, nurses were viewed as caregivers. In today’s world, image of nursing profession changes as nurses play many other roles such as patient’s advocates, educators, managers, team members, facilitators, and experts. (Zerwekh, 2006). As I read the entries from my reflective journal, I could see how my focus shifted from assisting patient with his basic needs at the beginning of the nursing school to more comprehensive nursing care today.
Introduction Nurse practitioners work in numerous roles and multiple settings. The nurse practitioner is to be found everywhere from urban to rural and isolated areas. This advanced practice nurse is also located in many specialty fields and the effectiveness of the role has been proven through research to be equal to the work of other disciplines (Gardner & Gardner, 2010). The most important point about the nurse practitioner role is that it is carried out according to a nursing model instead of the medical model. When the nursing approach is blended with the medical model, there are maximum benefits both for the patient and the physician because the knowledge and skills from both models are incorporated into collaborative practice.

As the number of patients on dialysis increases, so does the demand for hemodialysis nurses (Dunbar et al., 2012). This program is to provide a well-rounded orientation that will assist the new registered nurse that is integrating into this specialty both professionally and socially (Hall, 2006). Some have questioned whether nurses have lost their way while navigating the complexity of the increasingly technical environment that is contemporary health care. As technological, medical and administrative changes facilitated the advancement of nursing, the role of the advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) emerged. APRNs practice a greater set of skills, often diagnosing patients, determining a plan of treatment and absorbing many of the responsibilities previously held by physicians. Jeanne Lattanzio who worked as a registered nurse at the UConn Health Center for over 30 years including a 7-year stint as director of nursing. She said, “As doctors grew and learned more, nursing came right along.
1 Competences between Baccalaureate and Associated Degree Levels Juan A. Crisologo Grand Canyon University: Professional Dynamics 09/08/2013 2 Competences between Baccalaureate and Associated Degree Levels One of the main concerns of all organizations which regulate and vigil the nursing progression of the profession is the quality of care providing by their members. For the past several years, policymaker, researchers and practice leaders have identified that higher education does make a difference in how nurses practice and health outcomes. The quality of services provided is measured by the degree of competence in applying concepts of science, health, nursing theories and with their corresponding patient outcomes. Since the modern era of nursing which started with Florence Nightingale to the present, the different organizations like the America Association of Community Colleges (AACC), the Association of Communities Colleges Trustees (ACCT), the American Association of College of Nursing (AACN), the National League of Nursing (NLN), the National Organization for Associate Degree Nursing (N-OADN), and others have joined efforts to promote academic progression in nursing profession. These efforts had their historic move in September 2012, when many of the most Nursing Organizations join together to endorse the Joint Statement on Academic Progression for Nursing Students and Graduates (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, September 2012).

The number and demand of advanced practice nurses dramatically increased in the last decade. Despite the need for the higher level of nursing practice, there are many challenges that advanced practice nurses face every day. The purpose of this paper is to discuss opportunities, challenges, and practice requirements that Adult Gerontological Acute Care Nurse Practitioner has to overcome in order to address the needs and demands of the healthcare system in the state of New Mexico.
Empirical knowing focuses on evidenced based practice which leads to effective nursing practice. To be a competent nurse, you have to work on your empirical knowledge by attending stroke conferences, reading journals and continuing education units (CEU). Compared to Schultz and Meleis, empirical knowing validates nursing actions or interventions. Historically patients were not told they were dying or information about having a terminal disease was never disclosed to patients (Smith-Stoner,2011).But over the years or decades, that has changed because of emphasis on patient centered nursing practice (

This calls for a change in the training processes for nurses. It is agreeable that nursing training has been undergoing several changes in the last years. Over the same period, the role of nursing has increased in some areas while reducing in others. Such changes have constantly been associated with the nursing profession, methods used in the selection of new nurses and the impacts when providing patient-based education in the traditional learning (Carr 122). The training process for nurses has been often affected by specific factors such as problems faced by teaching faculties, models used to training them, and the characteristics attributed to the career.
