Michael Gomez 11/28/11 In the short story, “A Sound of Thunder” by Ray Bradbury, the setting takes place in a time traveling company where people are given the opportunity to go back in time to the era of the dinosaurs and be able to kill one. Eckels and a few others take the opportunity and decide to go back in time and kill a tyrannosaurs rex. The usage of foreshadowing brings out the conflict where Travis (Group leader) kills Eckels. The constant threats said by Travis directed to Eckels, brings suspicion in the audience if he kills Eckels or not. Eckels as an hunter, is motivated to go back in time, not only be able to see one in his own eyes, but kill a T-rex. Eckels, along with a few other people with Travis, were specifically told not to step off the designated path leading to the jungles roamed by the dinosaurs. As explained by Travis stepping on a plant or animal will ruin the generations of that species and would most likely affect the present in millions of years to come.…show more content…
When Eckels arrives in the forbidden jungles roamed by dinosaurs, Travis gives the group simple orders to stay on a designated floating path located in front of them. Reason is, stepping off the path would lead to major changes in the present, which is what Travis antagonizes. Eckels responds to his rules, “Then it wouldn’t pay for us even to touch the grass?” Sounding rather doubtful, Eckels questions Travis’s rules that make him be annoyed of Eckels. As the story continues, more rules are applied to the trip and Travis starts to hate the way he is. After explaining how killing an animal will destroy generations of it to come, and yet Eckels still doubts Travis saying, “so they’re dead”, “So what?” The attitude in Eckels reveals the disobedience he has towards the rules that Travis applies. Through foreshadowing, the reader has curiosity over the disobedience in Eckels voice questioning if he disobeys Travis or
