A simple Exhange of Niceties ”A Simple Exchange of Niceties” is a short story written by Joanne Fedler in 2007. When we first meet the narrator, she seems like a woman with very low self-esteem. She is alone in a park, confused and miserable. She has just realized that she is pregnant, and she has decided to get an abortion. She does not feel like she is worth loving at all. Neither by Damian (the man who got her pregnant) or by her own mother, who has never cared much for her. She went to prison for three months, when she was caught in shoplifting. She feels like she has not achieved much in her life “I’ve never done anything with my life” (p. 11, l. 37). The only important person in her life right now is her friend Barbie. It seems as the narrator thinks that everyone is against her and does not accept her. The bench plays an important role for her, she feels like it is the only spot on earth where she is accepted. She comes to the bench for peace and to clear her head for thoughts. If someone is already sitting on her bench, she gets annoyed and walks away. The bench is placed next to a duck pound and it creates an atmosphere with room for thoughts and it is exactly what the narrator uses it for. There are one reason why she have chosen exactly that bench, and not one of the other in the park is, that it is comfortable and does not have stats that protrudes into her back like the others have. She feels like it’s been waiting for her, almost like they are friends, and the bench is a living creature. The narrator point of the world is that is only contains people who are very judgmental. Especially towards people who have not achieved much in life. Her mother does not believe in her and the way the narrator talks about her it seems like her own mother does not love her.
