Thomas Jefferson was interested in many things. He was a statesman, an author, a politician, a scientist, a farmer, an architect, and a philosopher. A man of many talents. The video, “Philosopher of Freedom”, describes the life of Jefferson and tells of his many accomplishments. Jefferson was well educated. His father made sure that all of his children were tutored at an early age. In addition to his studies he also learned music, it was one of his passions. Two years later Thomas went to France and succeeded Benjamin Franklin as the U.S. Minister. He spent five years in France and when he returned to Monticello he was elected as George Washington’s Secretary of State. After being in public service for many years, Jefferson came home. He ran for president against John Adams and by placing second he became vice president. After Adams’ four year term Jefferson ran against him again and in 1801 was elected the third president of the United States. His first term as president was greatly successful and he was able to negotiate the purchase of the Louisiana Territory which doubled the size of the Union. He served two terms and in 1808 his chosen successor, James Madison, won the election. He retired to Monticello, and in his 70’s decided to draw up the plans for The University of Virginia, his final achievement.
