Youth Violence in Schools American InterContinental University Abstract During this paper, I will discuss youth violence in schools, and how the media has portrayed it. I will focus on the urban schools since it has the bulk of stigmatism resulting from public opponents with who placed blame on the parents opposed to the type of community these children are forced to be a part of. In addition, there is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), which is the cause of many of these youths acting out. lastly, acknowledging the social groups and parents who are trying to aid with being positive in fighting those stigmas and obstacles by educating them and giving them different types of avenues to spend their time. Violence in Schools I chose Youth Violence in Schools as the topic for my post.
(2013) said that, "We cannot continue to dismiss bullying as a harmless, almost inevitable, part of growing up." "We need to change this mindset and acknowledge this as a serious problem for both the individual and the country as a whole; the effects are long-lasting and significant." According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 20 percent of U.S. students in grades 9 through 12 were bullied at some point in 2011. Bullying should be a crime, there are kids out there that are killing themselves because of what other kids are saying about that person. It's just horrible.
Bullying could happen in many forms, it could be cyber, verbal or physical. Everyone can be prevented bullying from happening. At school and the community teachers, counselor and community leaders can look for change in behavior in people to identify a bully. Examples of verbal bullying could be the names calling and taunting. Physical bullying is involved the intent a person to hurt the other party.
Cyber bullying is when someone is being harrassed, threaten, humiliated, or otherwise though the internet and any other electronics. The effect cyber bullying has on people is why laws should be passed. There are two types of cyber bulling; direct attack and cyber bullying through proxy. Direct attack is a message that is sent to a child directly. Examples are instant messaging, text messaging, blog, emails, etc.
Also similar to many school shooters, Harris and Klebold were found to be victims of bullying. Perpetrators of school killings frequently voice severe anger and isolation preceding their actions. They may have a history of violence, or uncommon inappropriate and extreme behaviors at school.. Parents are a big problem in this issue; some don’t care what their kids
In 2008 House Bill 91 was enacted in Kentucky. This act, “Requires school districts to have procedures for reporting and assisting students engaging in disruptive and disorderly behavior, including assault, harassment, intimidation, or bullying of another student. Also requires a strategy for protecting from retaliation” (NCSL, 2014). This bill was specifically enacted, but not limited, to focus on, “students who are victims of felony offenses” (education.ky.gov, 2008). The violence in our school systems, as a nation, has been increasing significantly.
Government issued programs, websites and helplines have all been organised in order to raise awareness and dispraise the act of Bullying. The media has noted Bullying as a topic of great importance, thus articles are published in more and more magazines, newspapers and websites. There are titles published in the Human Rights Commission against the harassment of others, whether verbally, physically or over the internet. Large groups of volunteers work with students, mostly teenagers to overcome their difficulties and set them on the right path of life. The acts of bullying have also been listed as an offence in criminal records, and is also in the Trends and Issues in criminal and criminal justice, advertised by the Australian Institute of Criminology.
Patrick McAuley Satire Essay 1/22/13 Bully for the Best According to an article written by MSNBC contributor Linda Carrol, everyday across our country one out of every six school kids is affected by the terrible use of bullying. Bullying is the largest problem concerning the safety and well-being of children at school. Students complain that bullying problems have driven them to lose focus in their learning, causing grades to drop and self-confidence to deteriorate over time. Bullies seem to target the weaker students, both physically and mentally. All schools say “no” to bullying, but why not say “yes”.
This facility is known as one of the most aggressive in the country for young violent offenders. Last Chance in Texas is about teens that have committed serious crimes being rehabilitated in order to re-enter into society and reduce their risk of recidivism. The main focus of the author is to give a full insight to the workings of a rehabilitative program in a TYC State School. Hubner breaks the book into two segments: Boys and Girls. The introductory gives a little background on how the TYC came about.
Individuals that bully have a mental imbalance of power among his or her peers that shows signs of unwanted aggressive behavior, repeated threats towards other children. Bullying includes the aggressive attacking on someone with verbal or physical abuse repeatedly. This form of behavior comes from acting out because the child’s home environment is abusive and this child must vent this anger on his or her peers. Bullying can be stopped in all schools if the community leaders, teachers, parents and law enforcement were to develop prevention and intervention programs as well as making bullying a crime punishable by law.Find/locate credible academic sources that specifically outline prevention and intervention programs.
