A public leader is a role where a person holds a public office and serves, and guides the community as a whole. An example of a public leader is the role of a mayor, governor, or any political figure that serves for the betterment. As a public leader Condoleeza Rice embodies what contingency theory is. Condoleeza Rice served as the Secretary of State under the Bush Administration from 2005 to 2009. As the Secretary of State she served as the President’s advisor on U.S. Foreign Policy, she negotiates, interprets, and terminates treaties and agreements, supervises the administration of the U.S. Immigration laws (Duties of Secretary of State, 2009) abroad just to name a few. The contingency theory states there is no one single way of leading. It also states that every leadership style should be based on certain situations. Based on the job description of the Secretary of State, Ms. Rice has to go into each situation differently. She was constantly dealing with people from different countries, different backgrounds, and different cultural values just to mention a few. As a Foreign Policy Advisor each country had their own policy on how to handle foreign issues and she had to go in every situation thinking differently based on that country. Another public leader that embodies a different theory is Chris Christie. Chris Christie is the current Governor of New Jersey. He is the 55 governor of New Jersey and a member of the Republican Party. The trait theory believes that people are either born, or made with certain qualities that will allow them excel in leadership. As governor of the State of New Jersey the public look to Christie to lead the state in the affairs of education, implementing state laws, and as a leader peruse new policies that will positively impact the state.
