Capitalism mostly has a "free market" economy, which means people buy and sell things by their own judgment. Opposingly, socialism is an economic system characterised by a kind of society where people work together to get a fair standard of living (TheFreeDictionary, 2013). Socialists believe capitalism is bad for society and the government is responsible for reducing it via programs that benefit the poor such as free public education, free or subsidized healthcare, higher taxes on the rich. In contrast, capitalists believe that government does not use economic resources as efficiently as private enterprise and therefore society is better off with the free market determining economic winners and losers (Diffen, 2013). In capitalism, the market determines price, including the price of labour.
Since the days of industry moguls like Carnegie, Morgan, and Rockefeller, money and the achievement of the American Dream have appealed to the American people as indicators of success. The glint of gold, unfortunately, often blinds the greedy from the ill effects of good fortune. In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, The Great Gatsby, Jay Gatsby and his peers are affected by their wealth or lack of it in varying ways, but Fitzgerald emphasizes the negative effect money has on his characters. Money and the pursuit of it are corrupting factors in capitalistic American society, as the wealthy can afford to be apathetic and careless. The wealthy are made shallow by their fortune and flit about with no real purpose, and are comforted knowing that they have the means to entertain themselves.
Capitalism affects everyone in a different way; it affects the quality of life one can have. Capitalism is morally deficient economic system in today’s society because it creates an unequal opportunity for citizens, causes a gap in the economic classes, has reversed the consumer- retailer relationship from a ‘push’ to a ‘pull’, leads to unfair free trading with other countries, and loses jobs for the hard working United States citizens. Capitalism creates an unequal opportunity for citizens to obtain an equal education, equal housing, and equal jobs opportunities in society. A symbolic analyst according to Robert B. Reich, in “Why the Rich Are Getting Richer and the Poor, Poorer” is in support of higher education. People with a higher education are not only able to help save their country, but they are able to help save the world.
Believers and people who practice both socialism and capitalism have heavy criticism of each other. Socialists for example believe that Capitalists produce a system where there is a clear distinction among the rich and the poor. The system is believed to encourage exploitation of workers, so that the business owners become wealthy. These business owners are the ones in many cases who influence policies, by using their wealth to getting what they want, by funding political campaigns, for example. Capitalists, on the other hand, believe that Socialists deny people their basic rights of freedom of decisions and opportunities.
For example, greed causes businessmen to compete with other businessmen, thus, keeping prices reasonable and forces them to keep up with consumer demands. But then greed could cause businessmen to make not so smart decisions to make more money which may affect everyone in the economy negatively. But I still believe that greed is good for capitalism in the US. I
Immigration, damaging or helpful? Immigration has been a problem in the United States since before the country was established. Many citizens and politicians claim that illegal immigration is a hindrance to the country’s economy because immigrants take American jobs and that they don’t pay taxes. They also agree that our government spends too much money in keeping them out. People on the other side of this argument claim that immigrants help by taking unwanted jobs with very little pay, and in doing that they are helping keep the prices of domestic goods down across the country.
Jeffery Reiman describes how the white and wealthy slide through the system, while the low income, primarily male sector is targeted. Michelle Alexander goes as far to compare mass incarceration with the old Jim Crow laws. In short, the criminal justice system is not one built on integrity, nor does it provide safety to all Americans. The system is profit driven
The amount of a role government plays in a persons life is one of the differences between the liberal and Marxist theory. The issues of equality, social status and power are also important. Liberalism, in regards to economic status, is far more beneficial to the individual than a Marxist social ideal. If you are afforded the freedom a liberal system provides, there is a very high ceiling for success, be it wealth, power or a fulfilling existence. A Marxist would argue the same, but because of the underlying limitations (“leveling” by the people or a ruling power i.e.
After looking at the pro’s and cons, we should then be able to decide if its more beneficial or not to move manufacturing operations off shore to a country trading partner with weaker currency. In the first part, we shall see the pro’s of moving operations off shore to another country. Undoubtedly, a major reason for a company to move its operations off shore is due to cheap labour. For example, labour in countries in China and India and other certain countries are cheaper compared to highly developed countries such as United States and Japan. This is as the economy is larger in developed countries, their currency appreciates and is much higher compared to less developed countries, thus labor is cheaper to be paid in less developed countries.
Firstly, real disposable income is the main influence of consumer expenditure. Richer households tend to spend more than poorer ones. This is important because the amount of real disposable income will dramatically effect the AD as if the amount is low then barely any money will be spent. Secondly, wealth is another factor. The richer people are the higher their APC.
