Growing up in the same environment does not always mean that siblings will grow to be the same person with the same values and beliefs. Alice Walker's short story "Everyday Use" is about the conflict that multi-generational families have with understanding the importance of identity and ancestry. The story focuses on the relationship between a mother and her two daughters, Dee and Maggie, over their grandmothers quilts. Unlike Mama, Dee is educated and is envied, Maggie, who was scarred in a house fire when she was little. Dee has returned from a long trip away from home and now determines her culture by the things she gathers from the house like the quilts and butter churn but in the end Maggie is the one with the right idea about her heritage.
In Kate Chopin’s short story, “A Pair of Silk Stockings” the protagonist, a caring mother, is the unexpected possessor of fifteen dollars. She planned on spending it on her children, but temptation causes her to give into her desires. The story shows that, sometimes people give into temptation to fulfill desires and forget about their responsibilities. The story begins with Mrs. Sommers becoming the unexpected possessor of fifteen dollars and deciding what to do with the money. “The question of investment was one that occupied her greatly,” because “she did not wish to act hastily to do anything she might afterward regret.” Mrs. Sommers finally decides to, “buy so and so many yards of percale for new shirt waists for the boys and Janie and Mag…Mag should have another gown…she would get caps for the boys and sailor-hats for the girls.” But Mrs. Sommers is impulsive.
She was a widow who lived to train and educate her children and was thought very highly of as a wise noble matron. She had many suitors but enjoyed not being married because she enjoyed the freedom of watching over her children. She trained her children to be moral, righteous, and develop love for their country. Alice's parents tell her who she is permitted to see. They also instruct her how to dress, and of course how not to. It is through experiences such as Alice's younger sister falling off the bed, under her watch, that Alice's parents have a crucial influence on her self-discovery. Specifically, Alice's relatives influence her self-discovery journey by not being supportive. As Alice had to grow up basically looking after her self and her younger siblings she learned that even if you do not have support you still need to follow your dreams and live you life.
Riley Walters October 26, 2014 “Everyday Use” Character Analysis The Character of Mama in “Everyday Use” Mama, the narrator of Alice Walker’s story, “Everyday Use,” is a strong, loving mother who is sometimes threatened and burdened by her daughters, Dee and Maggie. Gentle and stern, her inner monologue offers us a glimpse of the limits of a mother’s unconditional love. Mama is brutally honest and often critical in her assessment of both Dee and Maggie. She harshly describes shy, withering Maggie’s limitations, and Dee provokes an even more pointed evaluation. Mama resents the education, sophistication, and air of superiority that Dee has acquired over the years.
She wants to return to her virtuousness self and have a source of strength and inspiration. “Theme” Coming of Age Like many other books on memoirs and coming of age, “Almost A Woman” moves along the common thematic lines like parent-child conflicts, sibling rivalries, the path to adulthood, friendships, relationships with the opposite sex, and social issues. It is evident that the transition in coming of age is not easy because of the many challenges Negi and her family faced. For instance, as she comes of age, Esmeralda Santiago takes over the life multi-roles of student, daughter, and interpreter for her family. She lacks the ability to speak good English, her family is poor, and she is alienated because she comes from a different culture.
The values of heritage seem to have been lost with the gain of knowledge when Dee has gone to college. Her actions she displays when she comes home for a visit are shocking to her family. It is almost as if Dee is using them for a show, rather than a visit that has been well overdue. It’s one thing to know what heritage is but another to understand what your heritage is. Mama was always one who could not say “no” to her daughter and she always tried to please her regardless if her daughter appreciated it or not.
Firstly, Luisa influenced Antonio a lot through her counsel she played the role of a wife and kept the family and the vision together. This is why Antonio refers to their marriage as the best decision he ever made, this unfortunately cannot be said for the Bingham’s. Barry Senior’s wife did not make an effort to keep the family together or provide counsel. Sometime all a broken family needs is the gentle touch of a mother. If she had made that effort maybe all the controversy between Barry junior and his sisters would have been prevented.
Sommers is a static character. In the beginning, she is a caring and loving mother. During the climax, her id conquers her superego and she becomes self-centered, but at the end of the story, she is back to where she was, being a devoted mother and wife to her family. Mrs. Sommers represents a woman who has been oppressed by the world of marriage. She is forced to fit in the social norm of being a proper mother and ‘woman’ that she has no time to explore her individuality because she lives in a patriarchal society.
This fact shows us that the members of the family love themselves more that the Mother. We can say that she is devoted to her family, but doesn’t think about herself at all because she does all the hard work that her family could enjoy the day. As she is altruist, she refuses to buy some new clothes. . in order to show this fact the author uses oxymoron “her old grey bonnet was awfully becoming her”, which is told by the girls.
