Date: July 5, 2011 Title of Selection: A Pair of Silk Stockings Author: Kate Chopin “A Pair of Silk Stockings” is written by Kate Chopin telling about the struggle of a woman searching for balance between family life and personal satisfaction. The story gives people a surprise feeling that they rarely see this situation. Anyways, “A Pair of Silk Stocking” is a good story revealing women’s thought that how they sacrifice for their family but they also need to satisfy their own hobbies. Mrs. Sommer is actually a good mother who has always taken care of her children. She always puts her children first. However, in this case, through an ordinary pair of stockings, she realizes that she has to do something for herself. The stockings give her a feeling of being satisfied since she has been Mrs. Sommer. Thus, she decides to get herself a pair of silk stockings, gloves, treat herself to lunch at a luxurious restaurant and a play at the theatre with elegant ladies. She has not done these things for time but every time he has done one thing, she feels more comfortable with herself. At the end of the story, Mrs. Sommer is sitting on a cable car wishing this would never end. When I first read the story, a thought pops up in my head is that Mrs. Sommer has done selfish things instead of putting her children first like she has always does. However, when I put myself in her position, I think this would be an ordinary thing that every single woman desires for. Mrs. Sommer has sacrificed too much for her family and this is just a little bit that she could enjoy. Apparently Mrs. Sommer doesn’t want to abandon her family neither abandon her personal identity while fulfilling the role of a wife and a mother.
