I grew up with my grandma and my aunt. My dad took us with him and my older sister. My grandma was the one who took care of us, but she was old. My grandma can’t read or write. And while I had my toys and my friends around I still had to be responsible about doing my homework and wake up every morning and wear my clothes to go to school.
Cooper uses his many hardships he endured in his young adulthood as themes of his novels. He perhaps uses the loss of his sister Hannah, along with the events surrounding the capture and murder of Jane McRae (which was a nationally known conflict at the time) as an influence for Cora and Alice in The Last of the Mohicans. He presents these characters as delicate and vulnerable as were Jane, and Hannah (Taylor 314-315). Cooper being so emotionally attached to his sister possibly uses the tragic death of Cora as an ode to the tragic death of his own sister. This is a reoccurring theme in many of Coopers works, including “The Pioneers” which one could say center on Elizabeth Temple as thinly disguised reworkings of Cooper's sister's untimely death.
Other novels I read include The Dead by James Joyce and Death of Ivan Ilyich by Leo Tolstoy, both of which addressed the theme of materialism and wealth as factors to being regarded highly in society, and how this way of functioning in society leads people away from living a true and happy life. These novels were written decades ago. One would think that with these societal problems being recognized for so long, we would have made more progress than we have by now. Instead, activists such as Audre Lourde stand decades later, addressing the same issues. Lourde, what with being a middle-aged, black, lesbian feminist with children, faces much of this oppression, and finds herself frowned upon by society.

Gender roles are assumed and there is a lack of communication amongst them. My mom has always taught me to help her maintain the household by cleaning and cooking for the rest of my family. I am the only daughter of a family of three children and have always had the responsibility of accommodating the men in my family. This has caused some resentment towards my brothers. Because the men leave family and home economics to the women, they assume the women will take care of it.
Older children were also in day care or on their own. Children were suddenly responsible for things far beyond their knowledge, like cooking, cleaning, doing laundry, and caring for their brothers and sisters, as well asthemselves. The kids had no warning of this, except for overhearing their parents' arguments about the mother working outside of the home. Excepting parents with mental illness, alcoholism, or other problem behavior, when parents abused or neglected their children, they were the ones who maintained homes and enforced rules for the family.
