Occupational Therapies Lamar Dawson University of Southern California Occupational Therapies Occupations are key to being a particular person. “Occupations come together within the contexts of our relationships with others to provide as with a sense of purpose and structure in our day-to-day activities, as well as over time. When we build our identities through occupations, we provide ourselves with the contexts necessary for creating meaningful lives, and life meaning helps us to be well” (Christiansen, 1999, p.593). Father Boyles church was in the middle of Pico Gardens and Aliso Village, which was know to have the highest concentration of gang activity in Los Angles in 1986. “ I buried my first young person killed because of gang violence in1988, and as of this writing, I have been called upon for this sad task an additional 167 times” (Boyle, 2010, p.2). Father Boyle has been around a lot of gang activity and being a pastor has helped him deal with gang members. Father Boyle eventually open Homeboy Industries to help gang members who were willing to get help to change their life. I believe all the relationships Father Boyle has create has helped him find his identity and became the person he wants to be. “ Identity is an overarching concept that shapes and is shaped by our relationships with others” (Christiansen, 1999, p.577). Rodney Peete is a former NFL quarterback from USC who is dealing with autism as a parent and tells his story of his son, Rodney jr. in Not My Boy! I believe because Peete played football, which is mentally and physically tough; eventually helped him deal with his sons autism disorder. When the doctors first told Peete that his son was diagnosed with a autism spectrum disorder, Peete could not believe it and part of the reason he named his book Not My Boy! I believe narratives were a big similarity between the authors and a major theme in the class. In Occupational Expressions of Diverse Identities and Lifestyles, Unit 1 on education taught me the truth about the United States educational systems. In Kozol’s article about savage inequalities in New York was a heart breaker for me and could be classified under the unit 2: opportunity, chance, and family. I believe there needs to be something done with the United States school systems in order to get the same quality of education to everybody regardless of race or
