A Gap of Sky Being a teenager is not always easy; it is difficult to figure out where you belong when you suddenly have to stand on your own, deal with everything at yourself and mainly just figure out how you want to live your life. This can be one of the reasons why many teenagers seek comfort in alcohol and drugs, which may be the case in the short story, “A Gap of Sky”, written by Anna Hope. Many people don’t know or is confused about what they want with their life because they are free to choose their own destiny. Like the main character Ellie wakes up after a day with party and drugs and realizes that it is the wrong dark, “ It is dark, but the wrong dark. Something is wrong with the dark”, that she woken up to. It is suddenly Sunday evening and not Sunday morning, apparently she has overslept which is problematic, because she has an essay to do, although she is not sure who it will benefit, she know the consequences of not doing it; being thrown out of school. So she is ready to spend the evening on writing the task, but discovers that she has no more printer ink left. Therefore she must through the streets of London in search of ink. “A Gap of Sky” reflects the thoughts of a nineteen-year-old girl, but it is told with a third person narration. The reader follows the story’s action by the way Ellie is thinking. The written appear almost as consciousness flows. This means that because of the stream of consciousness the style is associative and projecting the action, thoughts and reflections which is influenced by the state of mind and vocabulary such as swearword and the jargon of the young person. “Good plan. Good, this was good, fine. Coffee plunged, poured, slurped; hot, fuck that’s hot. Anything else? Of course: printer, printer’s out of ink. Student shop too. Fine. Time? Ten minutes to get there. Shit”, here the reader finds himself inside the
