Natural disasters and terrorist attacks pose great harm to our nation. This paper will give a brief summary of what went on during the 9/11 terrorist attacks and Hurricane Katrina. In order to assist victims recover from these disasters, many agencies helped with this process. Also, many psychological symptoms came from Hurricane Katrina and 9/11 that had a big impact on an individual’s wellbeing. On September 11, 2001, the United States experienced many horrific events that became known as 9/11. On this day 19 militants who was associated with al-Qaeda high jacked four commercial airlines and carried out suicide attacks against several targets in the United States. At 8:46 a.m., American Airline flight 11 struck the North tower in New York City. (www.history.com) The impact from the plane left a burning hole near the 80th floor of the skyscraper. During this time, I was stationed at Langley Air Force Base in the 71st Fighter Squadron. While standing in the heritage room, some members of our squadron and I were watching the news. When we first seen news coverage of the first plane hit the towers, many of us just thought it was accident, but at 9:03 a.m., another plane struck the South tower. (www.history.com) It was at this time, we knew it wasn’t an accident and knew we were under attack. I was in complete shock. Just when we thought it was over, a third plane, American Airlines flight 77, struck one of the Pentagon buildings. Around 9:59 a.m., the South tower collapsed. At 10:03 a.m., United Airlines flight 93 crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The North tower ended up collapsing at 10:28 a.m. (www.history.com) These attacks caused mass destruction and many lives were lost. In New York City, Washington D.C. and Shanksville, PA, 2,977 people killed and out of those killed, 343 were firefighters and 23 were New York police officers.
