During Anti-bullying week the school will have special assemblies to demonstrate the types of bullying and how children can report this behaviour. As a Teaching Assistant I should be seen to be approachable to speak to about any concerns that the children may have, that these discussions are confidential and that they will receive support, guidance and protection from all parties involved in bullying and violence. Bullying comes in different forms such as: • Verbal – this is when someone is called names, threatened and made to feel bad • Physical – this is when someone is hit, punched, pushed or have their personal items stolen and any other kind of physical, aggressive contact. • Social - Social bullying is when someone is left out of games, deliberately ignored and has bad things spread about them and made to feel like an outsider. • Psychological / Mental – this is when someone is intimidated and stalked • Cyber – In this technological age Cyber Bullying has become a problem.
Diblasio believes that people are more aware of bullying and are finally taking action and reporting it. For example she claims “people are more likely to know about bullying and feel that they have to repot it” (Diblasio). This may be true; however are they targeting the right people? Most of the parents whose child is being bullying instantly assumes it is the schools fault, yet they don’t target the actual bully first. Like I have mentioned in the previous paragraph, schools only have limited power when it comes to bullying.
There is a variety of things that can help stop a shooting in a school just by inputting some general guidelines and ideas. It may also highlight underlying difficulties such as dyslexia or learning difficulties. The Teacher may feel it is necessary to report the concerns to the Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCo) as further intervention could be required. The SENCo and teacher may then meet with the parents to discuss the concerns and agree the action they want to take. The school and parents may agree an Individual Educational Plan (IEP) which will set out targets to help the child progress. If, following assessment of this intervention, further help is needed; it may be decided to refer the child for an assessment by the Education Psychologist who can provide advice to the school on strategies to help the child.
* A clear account of the incident will be recorded and given to the line manager. * The keyworker or/and the line manager will talk with all concerned at a level the children will understand and will formally record the incident in the Incident Book. * Parents/carers will be invited in to discuss what has happened and what will happen next. * Each child must be given an opportunity to talk and the discussion should remain focussed on finding a solution to the problem and stopping the bullying from recurring * The adult will try to remain neutral and deliberately avoid direct closed questioning which may be interpreted as interrogatory or accusatory. There is a strict rule that needs to be followed concerning children being picked up from school and if parents cannot pick their children up, meaning someone else picking them up, the school needs to know to avoid any risks of child abduction. Children wait in the school entrance following after school activities, until the correct person arrive to collect the pupil. The duties of supervisory staff e.g. Teaching Assistants are to make themselves familiar with the H+S Act and any other safety issues relevant to their area of work. The School treats Health and Safety seriously, from the playground to the classrooms, the people in the setting are made aware of the risks and told that possible risks are also laminated and put on the walls as an extra reminder of any risks there may be.
Anti-bullying policies are in place in school to ensure the children know that bullying is not acceptable behaviour but a child should feel confident enough to report an incident if one occurs and should know who they can go to within the school to discuss any such situations. * Make a positive contribution-A child should feel like they make a positive contribution to the school by being noticed and rewarded for their achievements. 100 square points, head teacher stickers, merit awards are all ways of boosting s childs confidence and can encourage positive behaviour. * Develop social and emotional skills-Through Personal, Social and Health Education (PHSE) lessons, a school can ensure that all children develop these personal abilities and skills that will motivate them to strive for higher personal achievement, socially and academically throughout their lives, PHSE also helps a child to understand how they are developing personally and socially and tackles many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. Basic everyday good manners should be recognised and a subtle prompt given if missed to ensure the correct level of respect is both given and received.
By allowing certain behaviors to occur without consequences the teacher is sending the message that it is okay. This can cause the students to lose focus and a decrease in understanding of the lesson being taught. It can also allow chaos to reign supreme. Disruptions can also make other students feel threatened. Students must feel safe and secure in their class in order to learn and grow in education.
How can you judge and trust a person's character just by their status? As we grow up, we are taught not to fight violence with violence, because it only leads to more harm and doesn't solve the problem in any way. If a student harms someone, why should the teacher hurt or maybe even kill the student? This teaches people the wrong values. You may be thinking that teachers are unable to stand up to students or outside threats under current school conditions, but that doesn't mean we have to take these extreme measures.
