Three of the symbols that stood out to me in the movie Big Fish were the wedding ring, the shoe, and the eye. The wedding ring has an important symbolic meaning in the story. In the movie, Edward is a bright, adventurous man who begged for more than he was given. He was unable to be “caught” by the usual hustle and bustle of life. Instead, he was determined to complete the unique goals that he set for himself. However, when Edward found the love of his life, he was finally “captured”. He chased after Sandra and was soon married after his journey. This symbolizes Edwards’s life as the big fish, which was also captured by a wedding ring. The next symbol that I’ll discuss is the shoe. When Edward takes the path less followed, he stumbles upon Spectre. There, they take Edwards shoes, which to the townspeople means that he has to stay forever. When Edward decides to finally leave, the people of Spectre beg him not to leave, and tell him that it would be a long painful journey back without any shoes. Edward left anyways. When Edward decides that it’s time to leave his hometown and venture out for something more, he doesn’t stop until he has done exactly that. This symbolizes his motivation and drive, something that Edward has throughout the entire story. The last symbol that I’ll talk about is the eye. The Witches eye foresaw Edward’s future and how his death was going to occur. Edward kept that vision in mind throughout the rest of his life. He wouldn't except any other death except for what his death was really going to be, (according to the witch). This acting as sort of a guide for the rest of his life. He knew that he wanted to do something fulfilling in his lifetime, but he also knew that he was leaving this place any other way than the way that he saw in the
