SLIDE NUMBER 1- LOCKOUT My issue is on the 2am lockout which was proposed by the Victorian government during may 2008. In the midst of increasing levels of binge drinking amongst Melbourne’s youth as well as a rise in alcohol fuelled violence, the Victorian government decided to jump on the bandwagon and join other states such as Queensland and Brisbane, in putting forward a plan to cease the city’s night life issues. The 2am lockout would affect the major areas of the City of Melbourne, the city of Yarra, the city of Port Phillip and the city of Stonnington. Commencing in June, 2008, Melbourne night owls were banned from entering 487 inner-city nightclubs & bars after 2AM. When the 2AM lockout was announced, it provoked a massive reaction from the general public, hospitality industry as well as club owners and patrons. Despite the figures not wanting to initially come out by the government, police figures revealed a sharp increase in the number of assaults during the lockouts first month. This is because rejection increased the likelihood of a violent reaction from people attending their favourite night spots, and being refused entry after 2am proved to fuel further violence. At the start of June the trial began with the aim of reversing a growing trend of violence around the city’s nightlife scene, however, Victoria Police figures show a rise in the number of assaults in June compared with the corresponding period last year. Reported assaults in the city of Melbourne city rose by 18% to 211% for the month while property damage reports jumped 26% to 164. SLIDE FOUR-
