In her essay, “Abduction by aliens or sleep paralysis?”, Susan Blackmore explores the authenticity of a Roper Poll’s claim that “3.7 million American have gone through ‘indicator’ experiences, suggesting that they had probably been abducted by aliens”. A test was conducted among schoolchildren and undergraduates in Bristol, England. This test results indicated that the knowledge of alien behavior and appearance are product of reading and television watching than on their indicator experiences. Ultimately, these findings abolish the claim made by the Roper Poll that “3.7 million Americans had most likely been abducted”. Susan Blackmore first describes the different experiences that people have when they are being abducted by aliens. She explains every possible experience elaborate and descriptive. Most abduction occurs in the night and the person is most likely paralyzed unable to move or do something. Most of the time they are probed and “subjected to various medical procedures” by the aliens. These aliens or “grey” are describes as being “four feet high, with a slender body and neck, a large head, and huge, black, slanted, almond-shaped eyes”. The typical and stereotypical aliens are the rare aliens who are sometimes seen working with the “greys”. Many theories try to explain why these experiences happen. Some of the theories state that the abductees could be mentally ill, have a temporal lobe liability, or that abductions are elaborations of sleep paralysis.. A person who has a sleep paralysis episode usually wakes up paralyzed unable to move, “sense a presence in the room, feels fear or even terror, and may hear buzzing and humming noises or see strange lights”.
