It was published in 1870 by Pierre-Jules Hetzel, and was originally written in French. In this story Aronnax, Conseil, and Ned Land set out on a trip to kill a monster that has been plaguing the seas by destroying ships. However, when they finally encounter the monster they are thrown overboard, and eventually find themselves captives of a mysterious man named Captain Nemo in what is actually a submarine. The book, 20,000 Leagues under the Sea, by Jules Verne, illustrates that although Captain Nemo showed respect for God as the Creator, he did not have faith in God; rather, he sought revenge against humanity. Captain Nemo showed respect for God as the Creator. An example of this is that he valued life to a certain extent. He cried when a member of his crew died after receiving a serious wound during a mysterious incident, and he also saved the life of a pearl diver. He showed appreciation for the beauty in God’s creations as well. Finally, when he was very upset he cried out “God almighty! Enough is enough!” One can see that Captain Nemo acknowledged God as the Creator. Even though Captain Nemo respected God as the creator, he did not have faith in Him. He separated himself from society out of anger towards humanity for something that had happened to his family. He also didn't trust God would punish the evil, and was trying to do it himself. He believed God was trying to punish him. While a person of faith would accept the suffering given to him, Captain Nemo was instead angry at God. Captain Nemo’s actions also lead you to believe that he sought revenge against society. By the time the story begins Captain Nemo has already sunk various ships with his submarine.
