Reflective Practice has been described as an unstructured approach directing understanding and learning, a self regulated process, commonly used in health and teaching professions, though applicable to all professions. Reflective practice is a learning process taught to professionals from a variety of disciplines by practitioners, with the aim of enhancing abilities to communicate and making informed/balanced decisions. In education, reflective practice refers to the process of the educator studying his or her own teaching techniques and determining what works better for the students. (Source: Wikipedia)

The importance of reflective practice lies on the idea that the service that education provides must reflect the needs of the children we teach and teachers can meet the needs of children and support their development by improving their services constantly.   Through reflective practice, teaching staff can assess where there is a lack in skills or knowledge and update these regularly to keep the services supportive to the children. What also appeals in the use of reflective practice for teachers and teaching staff is that teaching and learning are complex, and there is no sole right approach. Reflecting on different versions of teaching will lead to improvement in teaching practices. According to Paterson and Chapman (2013), reflecting on practice is the way to staying accountable. Without reflection, teaching staff will not able to look objectively at their actions or take into account their experience, or responses from their actions to improve practice. Using reflective practice, teaching staff are asking themselves, have we, to the best of our abilities, supported student learning, and provided all of our students with quality education.
