The film, “City Of God,” I believe supports Thomas Hobbes argument about the state of nature. He presents the argument that all individuals are self-interested and self-motivated. We are all inherently evil and the ultimate key to our psychology is fear and desire. Our biggest fear being death and our biggest desire is to live. This is exactly what life was like for the residents of the City of God. They will do anything within their own power to help themselves survive. The beginning of the movie supports this argument with the Tender Trio thinking they ran the town. They steal money and gas not only for themselves but for the townspeople around them. This was for their self- interest and gain, but also to not be turned in when the cops are looking for them. Hobbes believes in the end we are all created equal so we have the right to anything necessary for survival. The people from the City of God were absent of true authority and because of limited resources they entered a state of war. Absence of authority lead to mass violence, drugs and overall extreme living conditions for anyone stuck living there. Once the tender trio were eventually almost all hunted down and killed a new generation came to power. Lil’ Ze’ formally known as Lil’ Dice, who previously tagged along with the Tender Trio became the new power with the gangs and drugs when he decided to take it by force starting with Blacky’s drug operation. Although he killed numerous people to become this power, he created a false sense of a leviathan. He was looked at like the true leader but in the end most people just tried to do what they could to stay out of the way and not die, because death in the end is our ultimate fear. Although there were less robberies, rapes and killings after Lil’ Ze took over, he still didn’t have ultimate power. With so many different leaders and gangs trying to
