Violations of Human Rights Through Winston Human rights are rights that every person is entitled to have regardless of ones nationality, sex or place of residence. Every person who is born on this earth is equally entitled to his/her human rights without being discriminated. In George Orwell’s novel 1984, human rights are non-existent as seen through the main character, Winston. Big Brother demonstrates violations of human rights through the use of telecreens which monitor Winston, disallowance of Winston developing a relationship with Julia, and having the freedom to express his feelings. These factors result in the death of Winston’s spirit. Big Brother violates Winston’s basic human rights by Monitoring him through tele screens, forbidding his relationship with Julia. Telescreens are used a central tool that allows the party of Big Brother to maintain control over society in Oceania. The party uses this tool to differentiate between the supporters of Big Brother. Telecreens allow the party to keep surveillance of the people and this is the reasoning as to why the people of Oceania cant escape, because Big Brother always has a watchful eye on the citizens. Due to the face that no one knows when they are being observed, they have to be careful of their word choice, and the actions they want to take. They even have to be careful of their thoughts, they can be convicted of a thing called thoughtcrime. They can be convicted of thoughtcrime just by their facial expressions. Winston’s first encounter with a telescreen when he was walking through the halls of Victory Mansion. He read multiple signs which said “BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING”. He heard a dull voice from the telescreen, Winston realized that he could dim the screen but could not turn it off. he also noticed that it can pick up what your saying no matter how quiet one is.
