Rhona Tattersall D1 Compare and contrast the political and economic problems of Germany during the periods 1919-23 and 1929-33 The Weimar Republic was created in Germany in 1918, it was the name given to mark the period of German history through the years 1919 until 1933, the creation of a new republic was a result of the extensive socialist conflict throughout Germany at the time. The hope in becoming a Republic was that the allies would treat Germany differently, rather than the way the allies treated the militaristic empire that no longer existed under their eyes. Germany was faced with a great deal of instability throughout the years under the name of the Weimar Republic, the government was faced with very polarized political ideologies, and found it difficult to please right and left wing parties. 1919, Germany was faced with huge economic, financial and social problems. After discovering what the treaty of Versailles true meanings were, the Germans were outraged. The socialists (SPD) at the time also known as the “November criminals” were blamed for stabbing their country in the back, dishonoring Germany by agreeing to such terms and creating humiliation for the Germans by allowing them to be titled the “defeated nation”. After being crowned the defeated nation following the First World War Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht alongside millions of Germans were furious, and ready to take action. However Luxemburg and Liebknecht had an advantage, they were the leaders of a radical social group the “Spartacists”. Resulting with the signing of the treaty of Versailles and being named the defeated nation, the spartacists, also known as the left wing rebellions attempted an uprising through a politically driven revolution. On the 5th of January 1919, the spartacist rose violently, taking to the streets firing guns and raising the communist red flag.
