Historical and Scientific Perspectives on Homosexuality Linda Collazo PSY/265 October 2, 2011 Dr. Thomas King Historical and Scientific Perspectives on Homosexuality Throughout history homosexuality documentation has been dependent on historical and scientific viewpoints. Homosexuality condemnation has long been a part of human societies. However, more recently homosexuality acceptance is rising. How homosexual individuals view themselves is vastly relative to historical and scientific perspectives on homosexuality. Because sexual diversity in contemporary times has become quite vast, these perspectives adhere to a worldly understanding of homosexuality. Historical perspectives on homosexuality vastly stem from religions around the globe and sexual behaviors of past societies. For instance, homosexuality relations of past Greek and Roman cultures were once frequent but denouncing those sexual associations became the belief of the Christian religion. These Christian beliefs and legalities together made way for viewing homosexuality as sinful and inappropriate, which became punishable under criminal offenses. Another historical perspective on homosexuality stems from traditionally specific gender roles. According to (Rathus, Nevid, & Fichner-Rathus, 2005, “p.” 301) “Within traditional Latino and Latina American culture, the family is the primary social unit. Men are expected to support and defend the family, and women are expected to be submissive, respectable, and deferential to men. Because women are expected to remain virgins until marriage, men sometimes engage in male-male sexual behavior without considering themselves gay.” However, in this culture sexual relations between women are traditionally thought as a threat to male dominance.
