“Twelve Years a Slave” In the spectacular autobiography, “Twelve Years a Slave” written by Solomon Northup, the author was a free, black, married, educated man, skilled as a musician, farmer, and carpenter. He was living in Saratoga Springs, New York, when two white men approached him with a job offer as a fiddler in a traveling circus. Solomon Northup shares his compelling story in amazing detail of what his life was like as a slave after being abducted in Washington City in 1841. Living as a free man prior to being kidnapped gave him some advantages over other slaves who had not known freedom. He found it difficult to succumb to the brutality of Tibeats, whom he was sold to because of his experience as a carpenter. Tibeats was a “small, crabbed, quick-tempered, spiteful man” (Northup 65). Solomon had no respect for the slave master and retaliated against him when he attempted to beat him. Northup overpowered Tibeats and beat him with his own whip. Tibeats hung Solomon by his neck from a tree; he was rescued by Master Ford and survived. Later during another disagreement with Tibeats, the slave master attacked Platt (Solomon’s slave name) with a hatchet and Platt ran away towards the swamp where he encountered alligators and water moccasins. He survived and returned back to Master Ford’s home after a couple of days on the run. Tibeats eventually sells Platt to Edwin Epps. Solomon describes Epps as “His manners are repulsive and coarse, and his language gives speedy and unequivocal evidence that he has never enjoyed the advantages of an education” (Northup 106). It is difficult to find any disadvantages to holding either attribute unless, you are a slave and face death if you reveal any of these qualities. The subject of slavery continues to be a very controversial topic, and there are no advantages to enslavement. Only the slave holder would have recognized any advantages. It is unfortunate that America was built on the backs of slaves. At the time, slaves cleared land, cultivated farms, built homes, built railroads and roads, picked cotton and tobacco which were one of America’s biggest exports. Slavery left a residue of discrimination and human trafficking that our country still writhes from in many communities to this day. Although Solomon Northup’s story is mind-blogging, he is not the only person to have suffered kidnapping and enslavement, his story is so intriguing because he freed himself, survived and wrote a book about his experiences as a slave. Some people may feel that slaves born into slavery would be better off than someone who was sold into slavery because as the saying goes, “You can’t miss what you never had”-Hunter S.
