“The School” is an optimistic story by Donald Barthelme that showcases how a teacher (Edgar) can teach his students through experiences that as fast as death can occur, life can be created. And in return learns through his students that though death is a tragic event and is a hard thing to forget, the only thing to do is to move forward in your life because life goes on. Death occurs in the beginning of the story with the example of trees and then displayed in different forms throughout most of the story. It isn’t until the last paragraph when new life comes with the arrival of a new class pet. Edgar describes the deaths as if they happened just weeks of each other. This shows that the deaths are still in the back of his mind. The kids ask him about the death, showing that they are curious about them, but as soon as they see the gerbil arrive, they forget all about the deaths. Schools are one of the first places where kid’s behavior and future educational success is shaped. The role of a teacher is to create a warm and safe environment for their students. The reason why the first years of school are so critical is because kids learn the basics they will need for their educational future. Teachers must love their career in order for their students to be comfortable. Teachers are the second mothers and fathers for the students because students spend a lot of time with them. The same way, mothers are not born being great mothers, teachers are not great teachers in a day, but as their experiences with their kids expand, they become experts on the field. We know that mothers look the best for their kids and one of their goals is to raise their kids so they can become professionals and pioneers for the society.
