One of the biggest problems that the possums cause is the destruction of natural habitats that are important to our native animals. There is an estimated population of 75 million possums in New Zealand. If there are 75 million possums eating 0.3kg of vegetation each, this is equal to 22500000kg of vegetation lost every night and the population is increasing by about 50% every year with every female having at least one baby per year. They carry and spread bovine tuberculosis to beef, dairy cattle and farmed deer. The disease is endemic in possums across about 38% of New Zealand. In these areas, nearly 70% of new herd infections of bovine tuberculosis can be traced back to possums or ferrets. This report is about 1080 and it’s use in getting the populations of the possums under control. It outlines some of the other alternatives to 1080 use and includes my own personal opinion of the subject.
