One of the major reasons for Holden’s depression is failing at many different things. Holden does not have any close friends to talk to and has a very hard time establishing long term relationships. Another cause for his depression is the death of his younger brother Allie, he has always thought that the world would have been better off if he had died instead of his brother. There are many reasons for Holden’s depression including multiple failures, having very few friends, and the death of his younger brother Allie. A large portion of Holden’s depression comes from failing multiple times.
When he was just an infant, his father was out searching for food to keep his family nurtured, and he never returned to his home. Tyson’s mother seems to think that he was run over by buffalo, but no one knows for sure. It is bad enough that Tyson is an only child, but he has practically lived his life without a father figure. Ever since Tyson has been old enough to fend for his mother and himself, he has taken responsibility as the “man of the family”. He cries himself to sleep each and every night because he has no one to look up to in his life.
Another guilt which he felt about his family was the fact that because of the convenience of plastics and throw away containers, they had no time really spent together as a family. Even the family dinner was forgone in place of fast-food and take-out. This was also disturbing and worrisome to Beavan since it went against everything his grandparents tried to teach him. Beavan grew up not but a 5 minute walk away from his grandparents and spent a great deal of time with them. Both having been born and lived though the Great Depression, they had a “Waste not, want not.” attitude that they tired to instil in Beavan.
“The silence came into the room. And the silence lasted”. Steinbeck does this to make the reader think about how Candy is feeling and how the other characters are sorry for him. As he has just lost his best friend that he has had for so long. Before Carlson leaves the bunk house Slim tries to tell him discreetly to bury the dog but Carlson makes it very obvious.
However, the reader is exposed to the harsh, brutal truth of the lower-class society. Because George Wilson is a poor servant that has had little to eat in several days, we can not help but have sympathy for him. The upper-class is stuck up and oblivious to the needs and cares of their servants. However, those servants help with and take care of the needs of the other servants. While Wilson is on his way to see Mr. Carson, we learn that he is very hungry and hasn’t eaten in days.
These texts suggest that it is often after experiencing different barriers in life that an individual can come to value and seek a true sense of belonging. Billy in “the simple gift” is the leading character, whose father is violent, careless and an alcoholic and has an absent mother, was never given the acceptance and love of how it felt to belong to someone. Instead using vulgar language was his way to describe how he felt; “...deadbeat no-hoper/shithole lonely downtrodden house/in Longlands Rd, Nowheresville”. This quote shows how billy was isolated from school and at home. With these impacts on his life the library and Westfield creek became his only places of happiness and belonging.
The blind man came to visit the wife and the narrator. The narrator was very mean towards him because he only thought about blind people through the stereotypes he has heard about on TV. The blind man whose name is Robert is a very caring and very open-minded and very connected to everything where the narrator is very mean, very lazy and likes to sit around and watch his TV all day and criticize people and is not connected to anything he is always to himself. The symbol in this short story is blindness and this is demonstrated structurally and thematically. Blindness is important structurally because the blind guy Robert even though he was not able to see he could of still pictured the beauty in his wife.
After bringing Ben back to the house the children started to stay away from the house. Jane was quiet and to herself but went to her friends house after school. Paul did come home but he was often in tears, whined alot and stared for long hours at nothing. He was too thin because of his malnutritioned appatite. He didnt concentrate on important things, he daydreemed and mooned restlesly. The problem with Paul was that he didn’t have a mother at the time when he was growing, which is why he turned out this way.
He dislikes ackly for the simple reason that he has bad hygiene and it annoys Holden. This small annoyance is something that most people would be able to get over but Holden has a habit of dwelling on these minor problems he has with everybody and not being able to get over them. With Stadlater just the fact that he took Jane out on a date and Holden has a secret crush on her, even though he hasn't seen her in years and there is no way for Stadlater to know that. Holden insists on disliking him for that small
Mr Ewell is a terrible father due to his abusiveness and neglect. He doesn?t care for or look after his children and so Mayella, his eldest daughter, has to carry out his job. ?Nobody was quite sure ho many children were on the place.
