In the “Psychology Research in Context” video, the goal of the videos is to demonstrate the methodology used by psychologist to develop a theory of psychological behavior patterns and gauge those results in a valid and reliable way. The reliability of the collected data from certain test is deemed reliable if the results of the test can be repeated with the same results as the theory used to define the test developed. To determine the validity of test in the video, one would have to understand validity and how it is determined. Validity refers to how well a test measures what it is purported to measure. While reliability is necessary, it alone is not sufficient. For a test to be reliable, it also needs to be valid. For example, if a scale is off by 2lbs, it reads one’s weight every day with an excess of 2lbs. The scale is reliable because it consistently reports the same weight every day, but it is not valid because it adds 2lbs to one’s true weight. It is not a valid measure of one’s weight. To determine the accuracy of the test and its validity, one must look at the different types of validity used to accurately determine if a test is reliable and valid. Face Validity ascertains that the measure appears to be assessing the intended idea or theory containing various conceptual elements, typically one considered to be subjective and not based on empirical evidence. The person with an interest or concern in something, especially a business, can easily assess face validity. Although this is not a very “scientific” type of validity, it may be an essential component in enlisting motivation of stakeholders. If the stakeholders do not believe the measure is an accurate assessment of the ability, they may become extricated from the task.
