Xiaomi (“The Apple of China”) Tech (Beijing Xiaomi Tech Limited Liability Company) was created and led by angel investor Lei Jun in Beijing in 2010. It consists of some top talents who worked in Google, Microsoft and KingSoft and focuses on iPhone and Android software development of smart phone and service operation of mobile internet. The logo of Xiaomi is “MI”, which is the abbreviation of Mobile Internet and represents that Xiaomi Tech is a mobile internet corporation. The company has been linked to Apple, but not for business but from the way Xiaomi strategize their business model, even their chairman and CEO, Mr. Lei Jun has been mention to resemble Steve Jobs in attire and his way of thinking. Xiaomi is a very unique cellphone company. The reason is simple: Xiaomi integrates the internet with the cellphone industry making full use of the internet to do the cellphone business. For example, Xiaomi has mobilized over 1 million fans on the internet to help with research, promotion, feedback and to participate in the whole process. Xiaomi believes it has an edge on other companies because it has more advanced sales model and sells all its products directly through its website. They do not have retail stores and neither do they use third party distributors, Mr. Li Jun believes this strategy takes down costs that larger companies such as Apple would spend when setting up shops and advertising. It makes its phones available for purchase only when a large-enough batch of devices is available for distribution. That means its sales come in spikes, which are weeks or even months apart. But those spikes are intense.
