Writing Assignment I – The Great Gatsby F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby makes reference to the dwellings of the Buchanan family, Nick Carraway and Jay Gatsby as a way to further deepening the readers understanding of the characters. All of the houses described are unique and individual to each character. By examining each of the main characters houses we are able to understand additional information like social position, lifestyle and personality. In examining such text the reader is able to better comprehend the plot and characters in the story. The personal residence of Tom and Daisy Buchanan is located on East Egg. Fitzgerald describes the house as being a “cheerful red-and-white Georgian Colonial Mansion, overlooking the bay” (Fitzgerald). The Buchanan’s mansion is a grand and beautiful home furnished with only the best furniture and extravagant rugs. The house is also described as having high hallways, and being very open with the wind passing thru the French windows. While the lifestyle of Tom and Daisy is very extravagant and lavish their relationship is not. Daisy suspects Tom of being involved in an affair with another woman and as such the relationship between the two is drifting apart. One could draw the connection between their open feeling house and the openness that is becoming of their relationship as they lose all forms of intimacy. In looking at the Buchanan’s house it is obvious that their social position is very high and Tom and Daisy would only be scene socializing with only the most elite social lights. Finally the personality of the Buchanan family, especially that of Tom is very pompous and haughty “Now he was a sturdy straw-haired man of thirty with a rather hard mouth and a supercilious manor. Two shining arrogant eyes had established dominance over his face…” It seems as though Tom has become more and more arrogant as his age and
