My 9/11 Experience At the age of six, I, like many other children, had a distorted sense of what "bad" actually meant. Bad was when I lost a toy or when my best friend couldn't come over to play. I hadn’t yet experienced anything that was truly bad. Soon enough, though, my definition of bad would change forever. The date was Tuesday, September 11, 2001. The flu got the best of me, so I had to miss school. Lying on the couch, I groaned about what I considered to be an agonizing headache (my idea of pain was, and still is, quite skewed.) My mother was in the kitchen, tending to my needs. I was channel-surfing due to my disapproval of the morning television programs. My mom, peering through the pass-through, shouted for me to stop. Alarmed, I dropped the remote and obeyed. On the screen was a plume of smoke consuming a tower. Those malevolent plumes of smoke would soon change my life forever. As a child, it opened my eyes. I saw the world for what it really was: callous and brutal. As I grew older, I grew more cautious. When it was discovered that al-Qaeda was behind the inexorable acts of terrorism, I unfairly discriminated against Muslims, automatically associating them with terrorism. This, to me, surprises me considering I have Islamic cousins (I definitely have no negative feelings towards anybody because of their race or religion now). Not everything that resulted from 9 /11 was negative, though. The American people came together and helped each other pull through. People displayed nationalism, pride, solidarity, and together we commiserated. We mourned the death of the thousands of lives claimed by the ruthless actions of the terrorists. The American people coming together in a time of need was a beautiful sight, even to the naive child I was. After seeing this, I knew that America would pull through and continue to
