I was born and raised in Pakistan, which you probably know is a developing third world country. I also spent thirteen out of the nineteen years of my life there. If you compare any given city in the United States with any city in Pakistan, say Karachi for example, the level of pollution is probably about one hundred times more. You could basically see a cloud of yellowish/grey dust suspended from the sky. Since, there was limited amount of land and growing population, the city government had to cut down the forests and build houses and other buildings to accommodate everyone. Therefore, it’s given where my ecocentric worldview comes from. Every life form as it exists today in this world was created by God (or as I say, Allah) and it has a right to live and breathe just as much as us humans. This is what my ancestors taught me throughout the years of my upbringing. As I grew up and saw the things around me, all I could derive from that was how selfish this human race was: they only thought about themselves, as if nothing else around them matters; or better yet it’s non-existent. For instance, whenever one of my friends would see a spider crawling on the ground, their first instinct would be to stomp it hard and kill it, even though it was ten feet away from them. I won’t lie, but I’m probably a huge arachnophobic, but that doesn’t mean I would go out of my way to kill a spider that’s not even near me. When I was in elementary school, every year we would celebrate Earth Day on the 22nd of April. On that day, our teachers would encourage every student to bring a little potted plant that we could put in the ground and regularly water it and watch it grow. This might sound ridiculous, but half the kids would skip school that day because they were “sick” or make up an excuse saying “my mommy didn’t take me to the nursery to buy the plant!” If a child is not taught that
