1. What role did the German invasion of the Soviet Union play in the decision to make a raid in Europe? As the German invasion was continuing throughout the Soviet Union, the Soviets were desperate for allies. The Soviets needed a distraction so that Germany didn’t have to focus their attention on them and also the Soviets threatened the Allies with siding with Germany if they did not come to help. Thus, the raids on Europe began for these reasons. 2. Why was the location of the Port Dieppe chosen? The location of Dieppe was chosen for many reasons. The fact that it was located over the English Channel made it ideal for the mobility of the troops. It was also within the striking distance of many planes. Lastly, it could provide supplies and support from other countries such as Canada. 3. Why did Canadians get involved? What were Canadians doing before they were sent to Dieppe? The Canadians got involved because of the demand in man power. General Harry Crera insisted that the Canadians should be included in the assault of Dieppe. The Canadians were training as Commandos at the Isle of Wight. 4. Describe the rehearsals which preceded the actual raid. The rehearsals were more of a training course prior to the raid. The Canadians ran assault courses. They also practiced on land masses where the tanks will be used. They disembarked from their landing crafts to practice landing on other land masses. They also practiced treating casualties for the Medical Corps. Although the training course was somewhat disorganized, they managed to do some amount of training. 5. Describe the feelings of the men when they heard they were actually going to raid Dieppe in July The Canadian men were excited and confident as soon as they hear they were actually going to raid Dieppe in July 6.
