Causes of World War One: The things that led to this historic event. I. World War One consisted of a widespread of deaths, major occurrences, and future changing events, but no one knows what really started this tragedy. II. Mutual Defenses A. History of Alliances 1. There were many alliances formed before world war one begun. 2. These alliances stated that if one country got into conflict with another, the countries in agreement with that country would have to back them up. 3. Once world war one begun, the countries that were allied had to defend each other. B. Members of the Alliances 1. The Ententes: France, Great Britain, and Russia. 2. The Central Powers: Austria-Hungary and Germany 3. Both the Ententes and the Central Powers were called the Great Powers. C. The Agreements 1. Russia was allied with Serbia 2. Germany was allied with Austria-Hungary 3. France was allied with Russia 4. Britain was allied with France and Belgium 5. Japan was allied with Belgium III. Assassination A. History of the Black Hand Movement 1. The Balkan states of Bosnia and Herzegovina had been annexed from Turkey and taken into the Austro-Hungarian Empire. 2. This was strongly resented by many Serbs and Croats and nationalist groups. 3. This formed the Black Hand Movement. B. How the assassination happened 1. Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife had decided to inspect the Austro-Hungarian troops in Bosnia. 2. The Black Hand had supplied a group of students with weapons for an assassination attempt to mark the occasion. 3. Serbian Nationalist Student Gavrilo Princip assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife. C. Importance to the cause of the war 1. Archduke Franz Ferdinand was heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne. 2. The Austro-Hungarian government blamed the Serbian government for the assassination. 3. Austria Hungry
