Summary/Response Essay Education affects on World Unity and Future When I woke up on September 11, 2001, I had no understanding of what had happened. Many people didn’t understand what had happened or even what was going to happen. Devastated, furious Americans blamed all the Muslims in the world and everyone in the Middle East for the deaths of all people who died that day. Today the citizens of America know very little about any other country or its issues; they only pay attention to issues on the home front. Patriotism seemed to envelope the idea of hatred against anyone that did wrong against the United States. No one knew why things happened- nobody could explain it. America needs to have international affairs be taught in schools and be known throughout the United States in order to achieve world peace. “Patriotism in America,” by Dudley Erskine Devlin explains the notion of patriotism as an extreme togetherness that seems to isolate the U.S. from the rest of the world. According to Devlin, the patriotism of the United States often results from situations of terror, but they also seem to promote isolation from the rest of the world. He also supports his claim with evidence from the country in the past and people who have been on the bad end of the patriotism. Devlin states that in order for true world peace, we as a country must become a part of the world, not simply a patriotic entity. He implies that, “students [need] to think of themselves as citizens of the world”. Devlin believes that high school students need to become more knowledgeable about the cultures of the world. According to him, “the best way to help our country become patriotic and cosmopolitan is to be broaden, not narrow, the education of our children”.
