While in-office workers feel that they have “decreased flexibility and a higher workload” (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute 2008), it is supposed that home office jobs lead to more efficiency. This assumption will be proven. First, the reasons why home office jobs support work-related stress will be described. Secondly, the reasons why home office jobs decrease the employees' motivation will be examined. Thirdly, the reasons why home office jobs support procrastination will be explained. First, home office jobs support work-related stress. Having a home office job means that you cannot make a clear distinction between work and pleasure. This means that your job, the connected problems and challenges are always present. Consequently, you are facing work-related stress 24/7. Because “excessive stress can interfere with your productivity” (Segal et al. 2012), home office jobs lead to less efficiency. Secondly, home office jobs decrease the employees' motivation. At home, there are no colleagues, who put pressure on you. On the one hand, this sounds like a comfortable working environment. On the other hand, having no colleagues lead to less competitive behavior. Since “competition is an intrinsic and powerful motivator” (Kulpa 2011), home office days lead to less motivation. Consequently, efficiency decreases. Thirdly, “one of the toughest things about the solitary nature of the home office is procrastination” (Levinson 2003). Of course, employees working at home do not have colleagues distracting them from doing their work. Still, there are many possibilities to prevent yourself from doing your actual work. Watching TV, doing the washing up, going grocery shopping, just to name a few examples. Everything seems to be more important than working. As a result, less work is done.
