      Within the workforce, today recruitment is an important aspect. With the nursing shortage in the United States (U.S.) recruitment is essential. The baby boomers are expected to increase the number of nurses needed and therefore increase the nursing shortage even more. It is expected that the number of Registered Nurses (RNs) needed by the year 2020 will increase to 340,000. More minority nurses are needed as well to accommodate the increasing cultures of African Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanic Americans, and Native Americans (Roussel, 2013). Cultural competence in nursing requires the cognitive ability necessary to appreciate the affects culture has on health care. It also requires a non-judgmental attitude and be receptive to learning about multiple cultures. Cultural receptiveness is important for promoting positive patient outcomes (Waite, Nardi, & Killian, 2013). A survey of evidence-based practice revealed that young adults that choose not to pursue a career in nursing believe that nurses mainly followed doctor’s orders, didn’t think that nursing was a real profession, felt that nursing was too challenging, and very few felt that nursing was a good opportunity to help people (Roussel, 2013).
      Once nurses are recruited then retention becomes a critical factor. Nurse recruiters believe that a clinical ladder program is vital to retention. This clinical ladder program was developed by nurses for nurses as a way to reach outside their comfort zone and identify leadership potential in succession planning. Patricia Benner’s theory from novice to expert is a framework for this clinical ladder program. Within her theory, she describes five levels of nursing experience.
