Some rhetorical devices Jefferson uses are so subtle that the average reader does not recognize them as obvious forms of rhetoric. The audience is only left with the powerful message that he intended to convey. Alliteration, one of the simplest devices he uses is fairly subtle yet effective in creating mood or tone through out the Declaration. In breaking down the phrase “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness,” the words “Life” and “Liberty” sort of roll off the tongue together. This could be applied to make a point that life and liberty are one in the same; that with life comes a given freedom, and the right to pursue ones own happiness is branched under that freedom.
Rarely is the idea discussed that the fall from innocence may be a good thing. While it is accepted as necessary, people assume that it would be better if it didn’t happen. Nathanial Hawthorne breaks this stereotype of literature; instead he decided to show the great things that can come from the fall. The Scarlet Letter is an allegory of the fortunate fall, the idea that while sin is a reality it can be a source of wisdom and spiritual enlightenment.

Because we are not used to encountering this brand of subjective third-person narration, it is tempting to conclude that Hawthorne and the narrator of “The Birthmark” are the same person. Today the term friendship is thrown around in a more nonchalant manner verses how it was perceived in earlier times. Being someone’s friend was not something that was given freely. In the Renaissance, for instance, Montaigne wrote, “for to undertake to wound and offend a man for his own good is to have a healthy love for him.” This meant that to correct or constructively criticize a friend was in good favor because the friend was looking out for his or her best interest. Today the act of criticizing a friend can result in a loss of that friendship. Montaigne also wrote, “those who venture to criticize us perform a remarkable act of friendship”.
In the eyes of God, the Puritan Society believed that they have been maintaining “the” society, free of sinners and mishaps but were only blinded by the truth. Are Roger Chillingworth and Arthur Dimmesdale the same person mentally? In my opinion, one was my husband and the other was my lover, different to an extent, but shared more in common than believed. Both men had their hidden secrets and the capability to hurt my soul/spirit. Chillingworth was nothing but the spoken term “husband” to me, and Dimmesdale was the lover who never seemed to acknowledge my existence in the public.
They are bitter because the author didn’t say what he was required to say. The author improvised the speech with his own ideas and talents, yet the Brotherhood considers it to be improper. The deviation from the Brotherhood’s intelligence or scientific approach is the main cause of the internal conflict. Perhaps, the author just wants to be free, saying whatever he feels to be right and careless about following a standard. “I could glimpse the possibility of being more than a member of a race.” (308) The author has devoted himself to the betterment of his people, either by going to college/ accepting the white way of life or speaking in front of other people.

After reading a few pages of this essay I was a little puzzled by this essay’s statements and claims as to how a simple kiss can change the fate of our lives with a person. A kiss is a powerful gesture towards something greater and is something very sacred to most people, while to others a kiss is a gate into a world of something less sacred and more pleasurable. A kiss is something that humans do to show favor to someone else, and this doesn’t have to be with the opposite sex. Sometimes a kiss from priest is a sign of good gesture and can be looked upon as a great honor while a kiss from a mob boss is a sign of dishonor and disloyalty.
People don’t judge him because of him lying while under the spotlight as much as the fact that he had an affair. People say ones true colors comes out when in challenged or questioned, but Bill Clinton didn’t lie because it was his true colors he lied because it natural instinct to save himself. In sum it is not fair to judge peoples actions when they are stressed because it more their instinct then decision. On the other hand when a person is in a carefree situation they tend to act without thinking of the consequences. For a person this may be the best time to judge one.
