Wonders of Ancient Egypt By: Laynabella Jonas In Egypt there are many ancient wonders. Pyramids are massive, well known monuments. They were tombs that housed and protected pharaohs, queens and there possessions for the afterlife. All Egyptian pyramids were built on the west bank of the Nile River in the desert. Because they were very large, it took 100,000 men over 20 years to build just one pyramid. The entrance was safely hidden on the north side of the pyramid. Inside the pyramid there are hidden doors and dead ends to prevent thieves from stealing it's treasure. There are more than thirty Pyramids still standing, but the treasure inside is gone. These monuments are outstanding reminders of the Egyptian civilization. The Sphinx is an imaginary creature found in ancient myths. It has the head of a man, falcon, or ram, and the body of a lion. In ancient Egypt the head resembled a pharaoh or king. The Great Sphinx is the most famous because it is the oldest and largest still standing. It is believed to be King Khafre. Over the years, the sphinx has eroded and almost completely buried with sand. It has been dug out at least four times. Even though it's imaginary, the sphinx is a famous creature. Egyptians preserved their loved ones bodies by making them in to mummies. They believed that the bodies would be needed in the afterlife. Mummification was a lengthy process. It took 70 days to prepare a body. Priests carefully removed the organs except the brain, and preserved them in jars. Egyptians thought that the brain was unimportant so they threw it out. The body was placed in several coffins. The family filled the tomb with treasures. On the walls of the tomb they wrote curses to keep robbers from stealing the treasure.
