Abstract: The purpose of this report is to discuss why women’s participation rate in sport is low. Generally, there are three problems that have led to this situation. The first barrier is the time constrains. Secondly, social and culture factors are another reason that women are not interested in sport. Lastly, there is lacking of sportive role models in the media which is a very serious problem related to this issue. The findings and recommendations of this report may be useful for sport clubs to increase their female memberships. 1. Introduction: Participating in sport can bring numerous benefits to an individual, for example it can reduce the risk of medical conditions and also increases self-confidence, however according to the report from Australian Bureau of Statistics (2012), males have a slightly higher participation rates in sports of almost every age’s group in Australia. Actually there are three barriers leading phenomena of a lower female to male ratio in sport clubs. The first barrier is the time constrains. Secondly, social and cultural problem is another factor, and lastly women are lacking of sportive role models is a cause of the situation. An Australian community sporting club is concerned about this problem. The aim of this report is to discuss how those barriers affect female participation in sports and offers suggestions to increase the female members in the club. 2. Findings: 2.1 Time Constrains One of the important barriers to physical activity of women is that they lack time. As Yeats (2010) claims that the family commitments such as household and childcare are mostly response to women so most of women do not have enough time to do physical exercise. 2.1.1 Working Women Canberra (2007) as cited by Yeats (2010) states that 19% of Australian Women are lack of exercise because of work and study commitments.
