They have had a very different upbringing to all of us, and their values and beliefs are very different to our own. This has caused many conflicts, particularly with the male Muslims taking instructions from younger female staff. My line manager and I have tried to educate when issues arise, having working with Muslims for many years, and asking them questions, we understand more of their values, and reinforcing a zero tolerance for any discrimination due to their beliefs. Members of staff that are lazy or regularly flout the rules are another factor for workplace conflict. If a member of staff is regularly late to work when others are always on time, or a member of staff uses their mobile phone when it is banned, this will cause conflict.
This links to society, where women are generally paid less than men to complete the same jobs, yet not enough people care and are complacent and therefore this issue cannot be improved. By showing the oppression of women in the text, Atwood has shown how complacency towards the oppression of women can have serious implications and effect women in every day society. Paragraph 2. Hypocritical and corrupt nature of people in authority. The commander created the regime but he doesn’t enjoy his current situation and is unhappy with his wife Serena Joy.
This story greatly impacted my life because not only do I believe in equal rights; for every person is equal, but I have been ridiculed for my similar life choices. I am not a transgender, but I am a gay single mother. I have been told by numerous people I’m not leading a good life for my son or I am going to damage him for the rest of his life. My situation is very different than Gwen’s but her story taught me something. Her situation was a lot worse than mine, more people were not accepting of the fact that she was transgender.
Many of the things that the older couple exhibited was frowned upon by the younger couple. The younger women especially felt as if the older women was belittling herself by doing everything at the man’s beckoned call. This is an example of how generations can look down upon each other based upon the way they live. Many factors come into play in gender roles. The one thing that must be recognized is that the roles are not one that happen over night.
When I thought of polygamy I thought of grown men marring many women, which some of them at very young ages. I have been raised to believe marriage should be between one man and one woman. I could never wrap my head around this cultural practice. I now realize the women are the ones who suffer the most. The practice of polygamy distorts the meaning of marriage.
Women, were so unhappy without having rights and it made them feel less loved and wanted. With this theory being applied to this issue of Women’s Rights, they come out on top of the situation. It took 130 years or so for women to evolve in society. “Utilitarianism is a normative ethical theory that places the locus of right and wrong solely on the outcomes (consequences) of choosing one action/policy over other actions/policies. As such, it moves beyond the scope of one's own interests and takes into account the interests of others.” (Cavalier, 2002) With the Women’s Rights Movement, there were a lot of pros and cons that can about, mostly positives.
They now share equal responsibilities in homecare and rasing the family. Slowly the gender roles that were previously set are melting away. Since the dawn of the feminist movement women have been able to accomplish what many thought impossible. But in our modern era woman now face other challenges, such as negative sexual attention. When a man is referred to as a ‘slut” it doesn’t associate to the actual definition used by society.
Hostile sexism is a negative emotion directed towards women such as anger, resentment, revile and so on. The relationship between Lou and Mindy shows hostile sexism in American society. As we all know, Lou doesn't really love Mindy, but he still wants to keep her. As a powerful man, Lou has everything, he has money, status and also he thinks he should have "love". In Lou's mind, women are just goods for powerful men.
For example, Antigone seems to be impervious toward Creon’s misogynistic ways; however, her sister, Ismene, is seen to be internalizing the idea that women are insignificant compared to men. We see the impact that this sexist culture has on Ismene when she tells Antigone, “We must remember that by birth we’re women, and, as such, we shouldn’t fight with men. Since those who rule are much more powerful, we must obey in this and in events which bring us even harsher agonies… Since I’m being compelled, I will obey those in control. That’s what I’m forced to do. It makes no sense to try to do too much” (77-85).
This type of discrimination prevents many from attaining their goals of reaching the American dream. There are people that believe one gender over the other is simply more valuable and useful compared to the other, which unfortunately lead to unequal opportunity. Gender discrimination is usually targeted towards woman in most cases, many believe that women are of weaker nature and therefore cannot perform better than men could. Marissa Salazar had been a recent target of gender discrimination in her workforce, much related to the issue of Mr. Palmer. Gender discrimination leads to psychological and emotional disturbance, resulting in demoralization and descend in performance standards.
