Woman and Flexibility in the Workplace Over the past fifty years, the woman’s movement into the workforce has significantly increased to be over half of the United States with seventy percent being working mothers. During the late 1960’s there was a surge of woman entering the workforce. This dynamic shift from a one-earner family to the two-earner household dramatically changed the socioeconomic class system in this country. Women still are the main caregiver but working full time out of the home was faced with the dilemma of not having anyone take care of the children. The workforce reflects a mix of dual-earner couples, women of childbearing age, single parents, and middle-aged workers who are often responsible for elder care (McCurdy, Newman & Lovrich, 2002, p. 30). This prompted the need for a change in the workplace structure to fit the changing environment of the working mothers. There was a notion this issue to be a personal private one and needed to be addressed personally. According to Glynn & Venator (2012), “This can no longer be thought of as a woman’s issue since the changing nature of our families impacts men and women, adults, and children” (para. 2). Looking back in history, women stepped into the workforce while men went to serve in the wars. After returning from World War II, the women went back into the home to raise the children. Moving out of the depression and pushing for minimum wage, change came because of workers unions influence and the support of a good leader; hence the Fair Labor Standards Act was passed. The civil and women’s rights movement created an atmosphere that was comfortable to more women. It was not until 1963, the Equal Pay Act was passed to address the inequality of pay wage.
