In my essay, I will list the issues presented in the Introduction of the study guide and weigh them up against the resolutions cited in the UNESCO Declaration on Cultural Diversity, pointing out how the texts and issues presented in the introduction support the resolutions within this declaration, thereafter listing the challenges the Declaration faces with relation to the texts and Introduction to the study guide. While the Introduction to the study guide addresses the issue of the different “Definitions of Culture” (p. iv, Only Study Guide for WLL2601), the UNESCO Declaration on Cultural Diversity does not aim to define culture, but rather to respect each individual’s concept thereof. It aims to establish this method of thinking between different cultures as a means to co-exist peacefully. The UNESCO Declaration on Cultural Diversity emphasises this need for co-existence between individuals within different culture groups. The prescribed texts, Vita, as well as Andorra presents the issue of “The construction of prejudices, stereotypes, projections and its possible consequences” (p.iv, p.vi, Only study guide for WLL2601) as stated in the introduction of the study guide and supports the Declaration in ARTICLE 2: “Policies for the inclusion and participation of all citizens are guarantees of social cohesion, the vitality of civil society and peace”. The consequences of actions such as prejudiced behaviour and stereotyping are usually violent and lead to the violation of human rights, which the UNESCO Declaration on Cultural Diversity also addresses in ARTICLE 4: “Human rights and guarantees of cultural diversity”, which states that “No one may invoke cultural diversity to infringe upon human rights guaranteed by international law, nor to limit their scope”.
