With close reference to literary and linguistic techniques explore writer’s attitudes to their upcoming marriages in an extract from Wuthering Heights, reliable and the ‘Get hitched for health and happiness’ article. Marriage is a main theme in each of the pieces. In Wuthering Heights it’s used as a vehicle to represent class struggle, revenge and many other main themes of the novel. ‘A Reliable Wife’ shares many of the same themes and the article is based on the supposed quality of life that being married brings. Both Wuthering Heights shows mixed views on marriage, although Nelly Dean show’s the quite traditional religious beliefs of the time on marriage, Cathy wants to use her marriage to Edgar as a method to help Heathcliff out of his current position. ‘Get hitched for health and happiness’ is written from a religious perspective, it’s written by CARE – Christian Action Research and Education, a religious charity that aims to bring Christian insight to all walks of life and so it’s clear that alike Nelly Dean in Wuthering Heights their views will have strong Christian influence. ‘A Reliable Wife’ is alike Wuthering Heights in its two main characters, from the little I’ve read about the book Ralph Truitt is almost a Byronic Hero alike Heathcliff, and Catherine Land marries Ralph for convenience and money alike Cathy marrying Edgar in Wuthering Heights. The general attitude of marriage changes throughout the three extracts. From the religious articles point of view it is a ‘God-given ideal setting for the natural desire of men and women to find a companion’ the use of the noun ‘setting’ gives the reader imagery of peace, calm and nature which the writer uses to emphasise the Christian view of marriage with it’s generally good connotations and picturesque family ideal.
