With account of the different phases of Hong Kong films from 1970s to 1990s, discuss how films reflect the social changes, and how these changes construct Hong Kong identity. Give example(s) from specific film(s) to illustrate your points. Chinese film had been dominated the development of the film industry in Hong Kong for a long period of time until 1970s. Local Cantonese films rose and gained popularity among Hong Kong people since 1970s. During the period between 1970s to 1990s, the development of Hong Kong films experienced ups and downs. However, regardless of the transformation of the film development, film no longer acts as an entertaining media only but also reflects the social situation of Hong Kong at that time. In the period of 1970s, Hong Kong was facing the time of serious corruption, social upheaval[1]. Meanwhile, the economy revived especially the entrepot trade with the decline of industrial sector. Films could show the life of general people lived in Hong Kong of that time. 'The House of 72 Tenants' is one of the examples. It was produced in 1973 and this film marked the revival of Cantonese films. It is a comedy talking about 72 tenants crowded together in an old building. Through their daily life, it portrays the life of low income group in Hong Kong. The poor living condition can also be seen. Apart from that, the 'Private Eyes' produced in 1976 mainly starred by Michael Hui,Sam Hui and Ricky Hui is another classic of pointing out the situation of the working class and exploitation of the workers.
