The title in this article is helpful because it explains that kids in class just go through the motion but this article explains how she tries to get more students involved rather them just not raise there hand and not participate. B. The topic and issues of this article are that kids in school are not participating in class as much as they should and then they aren’t learning the material they are supposed to.
It decides if they go into remedial, regular, or advanced classes. Then some students end up learning more than others where learning actually counts because administrators want to get them test ready. Before, teachers taught the subject and sometime throughout the year students took a test without pressure that they would be held back or certain things like that. Teachers are also affected because they actually have to teach two courses. There is a period out of the year where they can only teach about the subjects on the test.

Gatto uses this example of knowledge to prove his point that not every successful child went to school. A second time Gatto uses exemplification is when he is explaining his own experience in the school system as a teacher. He remembers that “my own experience had revealed to me what many other teachers must learn along the way, too, yet keep to themselves for fear of reprisal: if we wanted to we could easily and inexpensively jettison the old, stupid structures and help kids take an education rather than merely receive a schooling”. He uses this personal lesson from life to convey that children are only obeying what they are being told, only learning what they need to in order to escape the prison called school. As I progressed through the school system, I luckily did not have much trouble understanding the material until it came to high school where the level of comprehension and the level of the subject matter are much more challenging. In the earlier years of school from kindergarten to eighth grade, I did not try very hard. I didn’t need to try extra hard because I understood what was being taught fairly well, but when a problem or idea came up that I did not understand as easily as the others, I would not try to solve the problem. Rather, I would wait until the answer was given.
Gatto says that school diminishes creativity; if anything kids discover their hidden creativeness in class while at school. He also says that kids are not able to advance in higher learning. When clearly, kids are able to follow the teacher and be able to get A's while the subjects get more extreme. Gatto says, "teachers tend to blame the kids, as you might expect"(pg. 683) from personal experiences I can say that I have had great relationships with my teachers throughout elementary school and especially High school.
While this statements sound so simplistic, it’s really being lost in the world of teaching. While trying to keep up with testing standards and needs of students, we as teachers must make sure that we are not creating ignorant thinkers. Many of us may feel excited or even overwhelmed and fearful at the prospect of "finally being finished" and being able to "go out on our own" as adults. However, though society may now consider us adults, we of course still have so much to learn about what it means to be an adult. Most of us are probably not ready to "go out on our own." The good thing, though, is that we don't have to. While all our teachers and parents have been working all our lives to equip and prepare us for this stage in our lives, it's not like when we get to this point and go off to college or whatever you may plan to do now that they will all be gone; these people along with all the friends we've made over time will still be there, maybe not right where you can see them everyday, but nevertheless there to talk to and support you when you may need.
