Winston Churchill Winston Churchill was born November 30, 1874 and died on January 25, 1965. He was best known as the prime minister of Great Britain during WWII. He is recognized as one of the most important leaders in British and world history. His wartime leadership during WWII earned him this iconic status. When Britain opposed Hitler’s Nazi Germany, his speeches inspired, motivated, and uplifted an entire population during their darkest hours. Winston Churchill was born at Blenheim Palace. His father was Lord Randolph Churchill. He was a descendant of John Churchill the 1st Duke of Marlborough. His grandfather was John Spencer Churchill, the 7th Duke of Marlborough. His mother was Lady Randolph Churchill; her maiden name was Jenifer Jerome, the daughter of an American millionaire, Leonard Jerome. Winston greatly admired his father even though he received very little affection from him. He spent much of his childhood in boarding schools. He primarily stayed at Harrow school. After Harrow, he attended the Royal Military College at Sandhurst. He had political ambition right from the get go, but knew that in order to stand a chance in politics he needed money and a reputation. Winston Churchill graduated eighth out of 150 students at Sandhurst. The military would give him the reputation he wanted and journalism would provide him with the money he needed. He chose cavalry in the military and he continually volunteered for service in places where action was likely because he wanted to further his political agenda and he had an urge for adventure. In 1895, Churchill went to Cuba while on leave as a military observer during the Spanish – Cuban war due to the invitation of the Spanish government and they awarded him the Red Cross medal.
