Famous football coach, Vince Lombardi once said, "winning isn't everything; it's the only thing." This quote has now become the very core of American sports. It has also become the epitome of what is inconceivably wrong with competitive sports. Whether or not a team wins in their competition is rather irrelevant. What truly matters is the passion and undying drive of each member of the team. The team that heads into competition with strong will and devotion has twice as much to be proud of than the team who went in, won, and continued on without regard for honor. To strive for improvement should be the most important aspect of an athlete. Not the number of victories to losses they have under their belt. To play a sport and represent your school is an honor that many athletes presently do not take seriously. Integrity has been bred out of the modern athlete. In the mind of a present day athlete there is only winning or failure. For this to have become such a monumental statement in sports and life in general is wrong. If winning is all that matters than an athlete must do whatever it takes to finish the game on top. This means cheating, hurting members of the opposing team, and the use of performance enhancing drugs. Using such tactics to win demolishes all that the pride of being an athlete was created to be. Athletes are a much respected portion of our society. Children aspire to be like their favorite athlete their entire lives. But if that athlete uses steroids and continuously cheats to win then he is the exact opposite of what a child should
