Der Himmel über Berlin Wings of Desire Wim Wenders West Germany (German/French/English) 1987 125 minutes In the film Wings of Desire, Wim Wenders portrays peoples’ wants and desire and how they achieve their goals. Damiel and Cassiel sit in a car and discuss their logbooks for the day. Damiel goes on and says that he wishes he could live day by day, instead of forever. Damiel wants to experience the things of living, even things like a fever and black fingers from reading the newspaper. Later in the film, Damiel lets go of his angelic responsibilities and becomes a human. Damiel’s urge is so strong that he makes his wish come true as he rids himself of his armor and loses immortality. A young girl prostitutes herself to escape from her family. She sees this as a source of money to be able to move away and start a new life away from her parents. This shows her desperation, as prostituting ones body is not an easy choice. After the circus finds out that they are broke, Marion thinks about her unhappy disposition. The audience hears her thoughts as she says she wants someone to love. Marion desires someone to depend on and love her. Marion walks up next to Damiel at the bar. She realizes she must finally become serious since she senses that Damiel is the one she was waiting for. After a monologue, Marion says, “I know that it's you,” and kisses Damiel. In the film Wings of Desire, airlines allow their passengers to smoke on the airplane. As the airplane makes its final approach for landing, the stewardesses ask the passengers to stop smoking until the plane lands. This shows what time period the film takes place when smoking was still allowed in airplanes. As the camera goes by a radio tower, the audience hears American broadcasts. English radio stations in Berlin show that America has a presence in Berlin, as it is a redeveloping city. Damiel follows Marion
